How to choose between switching and voltage-limiting lightning protectors

Switching surge protectors (SPDs) and voltage-limited SPDs each play an important role in electrical protection. Their different characteristics and functions allow them to work together on the line to provide comprehensive protection for electrical equipment.

The switching SPD shows strong lightning energy dissipation ability with its gap discharge characteristics. When a line is struck by lightning, it is able to quickly direct the lightning energy underground, preventing the direct impact of lightning on electrical equipment. This type of protector is especially important at building entrances, where lightning energy is most likely to enter the electrical system. By choosing a switching SPD such as the OMP-APK series, you can ensure that the electrical circuits inside the building remain safe and stable in the event of lightning.

However, switching SPDs alone are not sufficient to fully protect electrical equipment. After the lightning energy has been dissipated, high overvoltages can occur in the back-end lines, which can also cause damage to the equipment. This is where voltage-limited SPDs play a key role. Voltage-limiting SPD adopts zinc oxide varistor device, although its lightning energy catharsis ability is relatively small, but its over-voltage suppression ability is very good. It responds quickly when an overvoltage is generated, limiting the voltage rise and thus protecting electrical equipment from damage. The use of a voltage-limiting SPD, such as the OMP-APM series, in the back-end circuit ensures that the electrical equipment can operate normally even after the lightning energy has been discharged.

Therefore, in practice, switching SPDs and voltage-limiting SPDs need to be used in conjunction. A complete electrical protection system can be formed by installing switching SPDs at the entrance of the building to discharge lightning energy and using voltage-limiting SPDs to limit the over-voltage in the back-end circuits. This configuration ensures that the equipment in the distribution circuit is fully protected during lightning weather and reduces the damage and losses caused by lightning.
