Lightning protection technology

What is the basis for classifying buildings for lightning protection?

According to the relevant provisions of GB 50057-94 "Code for Lightning Protection Design of Buildings" jointly issued by the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision and the Ministry of Construction of the People's Republic of China, buildings should be categorized into three types according to the requirements for lightning protection based on their significance, nature of their use, and the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of lightning accidents.

(1) Lightning protection for Category I buildings

(1) Any building that manufactures, uses or stores large quantities of explosive substances such as dynamite, gunpowder, detonating agents, artificial products, etc., where an explosion caused by an electric spark will cause great damage and personal injury or death.

2) Buildings with Zone 0 or Zone 10 explosion hazardous environments.

(3) Buildings with Zone 1 explosion hazardous environments, where explosions caused by electrical sparks can cause significant slope damage and personal injury or death.

(2) Lightning protection for category II buildings

(1) Buildings under the protection of national key cultural relics.

(2) State-level halls, office buildings, large-scale exhibitions and exposition buildings, large-scale railway stations, state guesthouses, national archives, large cities, such as important water supply pumping stations and other particularly important buildings.

(3) Buildings that are important to the national economy and contain a large amount of electronic equipment, such as national computing centers and international communication hubs.

(4) Buildings in which explosive substances are manufactured, used or stored and in which electrical sparks do not easily cause explosions or do not cause great damage and personal injury.

(5) Buildings with Zone 1 explosion-hazardous environments, and sparks are not likely to cause an explosion or not cause great damage and personal injury or death.

6) Buildings with Zone 2 or Zone 11 explosion hazardous environments.

(7) Open steel closed gas tanks in industrial enterprises with explosion hazards.

(8) Expected number of lightning strikes greater than 0.06 times / a ministry, provincial office buildings and other important or densely populated public buildings.

(9) General civil buildings such as residences and office buildings where the number of lightning strikes is expected to be greater than 0.3 times/a.

(3) Lightning protection for category III buildings

(1) Buildings under the protection of provincial key cultural relics and provincial archives.

(2) The number of expected lightning strikes is greater than or equal to 0.012 times/a and less than or equal to 0.06 times/a for ministry and provincial office buildings and their important or crowded public buildings.

(3) General civil buildings such as residences and office buildings where the number of expected lightning strikes is greater than or equal to 0.06 strikes/a and less than or equal to 0.3 strikes/a.

(4) General industrial buildings with an expected number of lightning strikes greater than or equal to 0.06 strikes/a.

(5) According to the impact on industrial production and the consequences of lightning strikes, and in combination with local meteorological, topographical, geological and surrounding environmental factors, to determine the need for lightning protection of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd districts of the fire hazardous environment.

(6) Isolated towering buildings such as chimneys and water towers with a height of 15m and above in areas where the average thunderstorm day is greater than 15d/a; and chimneys and water towers with a height of 20m and above in areas where the average thunderstorm day is less than or equal to 15d/a.

Notes:Lightning level of lightning strikes the line, its insulation is not yet flashover of the maximum current amplitude or can cause insulation flashover of the minimum amplitude of the lightning current, (electrical equipment or other equipment can withstand the maximum impact of the lightning current without damage to the current) unit of kA.
